The first version of HTML was made with SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language). SGML is a metalanguage, which means it can be used to create other languages. There were no standards for HTML in its beginnnigs until a group called the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) created standards by which web browsers had to follow.

HTML 3.0

HTML 3.0 was to be the replacement for 2.0, but was never widely adopted because browers were slow in slow in implementing new features available in HTML 3.0.

HTML 3.2 included support for limited programming with the use of scripts and additional support for the creation and formatting of tables and interactive form elements.

HTML 4.01

HTML 4.01 introduced support for style sheets, added new features for tables and forms, increased support for multimedia and expanded the scripting capabilities of HTML.

XHTML 1.0

XHTML 1.0 is a combination of HTML and XML with a slightly different set of coding standards and rules.
