You gaze at the bay and you see many boats leisurely floating in tranquil waters. Their white triangular sails bouncing as the wave gently splashes besides the boats’ bodies. You’re at peace thinking that still many people love recreational boating. Suddenly, out of nowhere a speeding object races past the stationary boats and cuts across the water. With trails of water spewing out behind its rear, it zigzags swiftly across the bay.

You wonder what it is, and you soon realize it’s one of those high-powered vehicles called the personal water craft. Personal water craft (PWC) or jet ski are small water vehicle capable of holding one or two riders at a time. The riders or boaters either sit or stand on it. It is designed for speed complimenting their sleek and aerodynamic design. It is powered by an in-board engine giving the vehicle thrusts for propulsion and steering.

Because of its widespread availability and rather affordable cost, the vehicle is widely used for recreation specially for racing purposes. In the US alone there are an estimated 1.5 million registered personal water craft users. That’s a big number, and this number keeps on growing each year as more and more people acquire Jet Skis. That is why several personal watercraft clubs or associations are being organized in each state and country not only in US but also around the world. Its versatility and speed is a big factor for its popularity.

The US Coast Guard classifies personal watercraft as Class A in-board motor vehicles. Meaning, these vehicles should have an on-board fire extinguishers and should also be installed with appropriate signaling devices. They are highly regulated because of safety concerns.

Many laws ban the use of watercraft at night. Because of its small size it can easily be over-looked by much larger vehicles thus accidents can occur. Local and sometimes international laws regulate their speed, noise, hours of operation and the distance from other boats or objects where the SeaDoo is operating. In many instances, a strong enforcement of boating and navigation is followed. This includes proper training of operators, adult supervision in case a minor is operating the vehicle and licensing is strictly enforced.

Because of its flexibility, versatility and speed, PWCs are also being used by law enforcers themselves. There are many instances where we see this type of vehicle being used in the movies to chase the antagonists. That’s in Hollywood but real police officers, coast guards or rangers use the personal watercraft as well to enforce laws on lakes, rivers and the shore lines.

And even rescuers are utilizing this vehicle in their sea rescue operations. Because it has no external propellers this can be safely used in delicate situation like extracting somebody from a floating wreck where any undue movement might kill the victim. Some scientists are even using Jet Skis to study the wildlife. However, scientists are selective in what type of water vehicle to use especially if they are traversing shallow bodies of water. PWCs obviously can greatly disturb the sediments below the water because of its propulsion.

For operators or owners of personal watercraft safety precautions should always be observed. This includes wearing of the following before operation: eye protection, foot protection, gloves, wet suits and helmet. Most insurance companies generally accept PWCs and their coverage include bodily injuries, property damage, guest passenger liability, medical payments and theft.

If you are intending to purchase or buy Jet Skis from your local Jet Ski dealers and use it remember to always be careful in order to avoid any untoward incidents which you might later regret. Always remember to stay alert. You should be aware of what is going on around you. Stay focused when operating the vehicle. Keep your senses alert to avert any accidents. Another basic rule is to stay away from similar vehicles or boats which can cause high-impact collision. Also stay away from swimmers, divers, skiers and fishermen as your vehicle can definitely cause injuries if improperly used. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.

PWCs are a great way to enjoy the water and the open-sea but remember each rider or operator or boater has a responsibility to protect his environment as well as his fellow human beings.
