With the constant growth of the mobile phone market in the UK, ever since its inception in the 'eighties and the fondly remembered "brick phones" which you almost needed to be a weightlifter to carry to the miniscule phones and services available now, it's hard to even think there was a time when mobile phones didn't fit in your pocket and didn't cost the earth to use. Nowadays, though, the UK mobile phone market is one of the biggest in the world, second only to Asia and certain parts of mainland Europe.

The reason for that can be explained easily whereas other countries don't take the mobile phone as an essential part of everyday life, the UK adopted the technology immediately. As the popularity grew and handsets became smaller and less expensive, so the market really expanded into its position today, where it's thought that there is the equivalent of one handset for every person in the country. This fact has not gone unnoticed by the so-called Big Four service providers.

Although Vodafone is still the market leader in mobile phone customers, it has nowhere near the amount of lead it used to have over its nearest competitor, the formerly British Telecomm-owned 02 (when it was known as BT Mobile, before being called BT Cellnet then 02). These two companies account for over 70% of the UK market, with Orange and T-Mobile following suit. Constantly trying to outdo each other, the result is a win for the consumer when it comes to calling plans and tariffs. Whether you're a business user who needs a tariff with more free or inclusive phone calls, or an individual who will probably text more, you'll be able to find a calling plan best for you on one of the four networks.

Another area where the UK mobile phone market has changed, and leads the way compared to many other countries, is in the pre-paid market. Whereas before you had to take out a minimum 12-month contract (sometimes as much as 18 months), which you were tied into regardless, now you have the option of buying a phone that you pay no monthly fees on; you simply load it with a pre-determined amount of credit, and once that runs out, you just buy some more. In fact, so popular has this trend become that it's mainly business users who now use contract phones, with the majority of customers on all networks being pre-paid.

With the UK mobile phone market being as popular and large as it is, with no signs of abating, there's never been a better time to purchase a phone. Not only can you visit a dedicated high street retailer, but there are also literally hundreds of online phone companies, who'll not only have the latest phones, but will often beat the prices and offers in the high street, since there are no overheads to worry about. It's for these reasons and more that the UK continues to lead the way when it comes to the mobile phone market today.
