5 Important Rules in Website Design
1) You should avoid the use of splash pages A splash page is the first pages your visitor will see when they arrive at your website. Splash pages normally have a nice image with words like "welcome" or "click here to enter". Some are flash images. The visitor to your site must then click this image to enter your site. In fact, they are just nice images on your page. They in fact have no real purpose. Do not let your visitors have a reason to click on the "back" button! Give them the value of your site up front without the splash page. 2) You should avoid using excessive banner advertisements Even the least net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements. So you will in turn just be wasting valuable website real estate. Instead, provide more valuable content to your visitors and weave your relevant affiliate links into your website content. Doing this will let your visitors feel that they are not being pushed to buy from you and instead want to buy from you. It will also make your site more eye friendly to the visitor. 3) Make sure you have a simple and clear navigation menu You have to provide your visitors with a simple and very straightforward navigation menu on your website. This way even a young child will know how to use the navigation menu. Stay away from complicated Flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. If your visitors don't know how to navigate, they will leave your site. Also make the navigation menu stand out to your visitors. Having a navigation menu that your visitor can’t find or see will also make them leave your site. Remember the importance of colors. 4) Make sure you have a clear indication of where the user is When your visitors are deeply engrossed in browsing your site, you will want to make sure they know which part of the site they are in at that moment. That way, they will be able to browse relevant information on your site or navigate to any section of the site easily. Don't confuse your visitors because a confused visitor will leave your site very quickly. 5) Try to avoid using audio or video on your site If your visitor is going to stay a long time at your site, reading your content, you will want to make sure they're not annoyed by some audio or video looping on your website. If you insist on adding audio or videos, make sure your visitor have some control over it -- volume or muting controls would work fine. Also you can let your user control whether or not to play the audio or video. About the Author
