A smiley was first developed in the year of 1982 by Scott Fahlman. This occurred at the Carnegie Mellon University when this person used a simple form of smiley like :-) on the bulletin board of computer science.

This was supposed to give a message that the note on the board should not be taken too seriously. Mr. Fahlman also used an opposite emoticon like :-( while writing a serious message on the board.

This way the free emoticons proved to be very expressive and gradually the usage was increased and most of the users liked this concept.

Variations of emoticons

Now you can find thousands of various emoticons which are equally popular among all the users of internet. They are the probably the easiest way to express your feelings without spending a single precious word from the mouth. They are formed using some ASCII characters and simple graphics.

In fact the popularity of the emoticons grew more when the biggies like AOL, Microsoft started including them in their features. Messenger services like Google talk, Rediff, Yahoo etc also contain various emoticons for their users. Some of the common formats of emoticons are >:-O (yelling), :-/( little frowned), :-O(shocked), :’-( (about to cry) and many more.

The emoticons are used in the emails and any other computer messaging services. You can get static and moving smiley. The moving ones have slightly complicated graphics but obviously they are more exciting.

Emoticons-are they free?

There are many emoticons available in various websites and some of them will ask for certain charges to use those emoticons. May be these emoticons are specially crafted and are far more exciting and lively than the general ones but if you can get them for free then what is the reason for paying for them.

With the messengers you get to use the simleys for free. They come under the general features while sending a message. There are other sites also which offer free emoticons. So there can be no reason good enough to make you pay for this. You can hardly find any computer savvy person who is not aware of the meanings and significance of the emoticons.

But there are people who prefer to get some emoticons made according to their own designs and patterns. Here you will have to pay charges as the emoticons you get here are absolutely customized and uniquely prepared for you.
