There are a variety of ways to start with a tomato garden. It depends somewhat on whether you plan to have a whole garden eventually, or are just looking to grow a few tomatoes for your occasional use.

If you just want a few tomatoes, the best thing to try is some type of container gardening. You have a wide range of choices here,

Self Watering Containers - You can start with just a pot on the patio, or you can add some type of self watering system to a pot. You can buy one of the commercially available planters, like the Earthbox. For any of these approaches, the challenge will be twofold. One, keeping the plant watered in the heat of the summer, and two, providing the proper support for the plant in the container. One way to minimize the effort to stake and support the tomatoes is to choose a tomato variety that is tailored for a container, such as Patio tomatoes. With it's smaller growth pattern, it will need just a minimum amount of support and still yield a nice crop for your personal use.

Upside Down Planters - To avoid the problems with staking and supporting your tomatoes, you can try using one of the different hanging tomato planters. There are the traditional hanging pots that can be used, or one of the latest crazes is to use an upside down tomato planter. Either of these approaches can work very well in a variety of settings, and will eliminate the need for staking or other cages in most cases. The one thing to watch it to make sure that there is adequate support for these planters, as they can get pretty heavy when you add the water necessary to keep the plants going. A hook into the home structure is the best, as many simple panter hooks won't be enough.

Use a soilless mix for these planters, and the risk of disease is greatly reduced. Put some slow release fertilizer, of a variety that is meant for use with tomatoes, into the soil mix when you prepare it, and you will be set to grow tomatoes in almost any setting you can imagine. Add water to keep the soil moist, and get ready to feast on the fruits of your efforts.
