Depression: The Global Epidemic
It is difficult going through life and not experiencing sadness or feeling low but these things normally pass in time; usually these feelings subside after a short while and are not considered symptoms of depression. Probably the most likely cause is stress, often owing to family or other relationship problems which for one reason or another cannot be readily solved; some people feel they are unable to act to correct whatever the problem is, but that is the key element in beating the condition. If you just try to ignore it and do not take any action, seek help or treatment, you may end up with more problems; the answer is to get the help needed to face the problem and stop it controlling your life. Often the problem stems from a situation in the workplace which is unresolved or ongoing; in all probability this will lead to a situation where the person who is depressed may even have a panic attack. The person who is having work problems can often end up unhappy and even have periods of time off work as they become less able to perform their duties; at that point it is imperative they receive urgent medical help to work through these problems. Depression can also be caused by an illness that causes a chemical imbalance in the body; these can produce symptoms and feelings that almost identical to a person who has emotional issues. In these circumstances the person's doctor should be made aware of any changes in mood so appropriate action can be taken. One of the biggest problems is where the symptoms of depression do not seem to have any cause that can be discovered; when they don't seem to have any cause that can be identified as the reason for the problem, medical staff will have to research the patient further. If there are issues that are hard to work through then help will be needed to resolve these issues; getting help is the first step in solving the problem. One type of is called Manic Depression although the correct term is Bipolar Disorder; unfortunately, new studies have found that owing to new overlap theories it can actually take up to five years before a person could be correctly diagnosed as suffering from this condition. The responsibility of finding help lies squarely on the sufferer's shoulders but this cannot happen until they assume responsibility. Just making that first move can make all the difference and enable the patient to feel as if they are making appositive move towards their treatment; if it is having a detrimental affect on your life then once something positive is done there will be a sense of relief which is the first step to becoming cured.
