Some universal questions asked when discussing asthma testing tend to be geared towards questions such as; do you have difficulty breathing when you exercise or from burden of work or other activities which require the asthmatic to put forth effort? If so, this most like started you down the path to seek asthma treatment or find information regarding testing for asthma? There are many analogous questions related to testing for asthma. Prior to Asthma treatment physicians should ask several questions related to your daily activities. Several questions try to establish if you having problems breathing because of asthma. Methods used for testing for asthma include the use if X-rays of the chest cavity or using an X-ray's to look at the persons sinuses. Nevertheless, questions are targeted towards finding out if and why you are having difficulty breathing. Further more, questions will most likely try to establish the following issues such as: wheezing, difficulty breathing, coughing or discuss problems associated to difficulty sleeping. These symptoms are common for people suffering from asthma, symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, difficulty breathing all which cause you to lose sleep and create stress? Asthma tests used before treating asthma include tests such as, Spirometry, Pulmonary Function testing. These tests are normally conducted prior to the start of an asthma treatment program if the physician feels it is safe for you wait to have these tests.

Spirometry testing starts with the patient breathing into a tube to try to measure the patient's lung volume. The majority of spirometry tests are done in hospitals or the physician's office. The unit used for testing is fairly small and is about the size of a large hard covered Biology book with a unique card which attaches to a flow sensing device.

Pulmonary Function Testing is a far more invasive than spirometry; the test dictates the patient needing testing sits in "body box" which is essentially a closed booth which provides greater accuracy while offering an assortment of measurements for physicians to look at. The reason of testing in an enclosed environment is to accurately evaluate the total amount of air in your lungs. Otherwise, physicians are only able to gauge what the patients are exhaling
A pulmonary function test with methacholine is difficult. The people needed to be evaluated using the all available tests and interviews described above prior to testing with methacholine. To continue testing physicians administer methacholine which has the ability to induce an asthma attack. Patients are normally provided with a metered dosage of methacholine by way of a nebulizer, thus escalating dosages until a 20% drop off in lung volume is achieved (in order for it be a positive test). A patient not suffering from asthma should not react to methacholine. The pulmonary function test with methacholine is one of the most specific ways for testing asthma before asthma treatment
