What really is pancreatitis? Simply put, pancreatitis is when the gland called pancreas is inflamed. The pancreas is located just behind your stomach. This special little gland has a major role in one’s digestive system. It produces two different kinds of substances namely the digestive hormone and the digestive juice. The digestive hormone is the substance usually made up of glucagon as well as insulin. Once the glucagon and the insulin are released into a person’s bloodstream, they will become the prime source of the body’s energy. On the other hand, the digestive juice is made up of bicarbonate as well as enzymes. The digestive juice must go through the pancreatic duct so that it may reach the duodenum or the small intestine. By the time the digestive juice is at the small intestine, it will now break down all the fats and the proteins of what you ate so that the nutrients can be absorbed by the body.

There are two types of pancreatitis – the acute and the chronic. The first one is the acute inflammation of the pancreas. This is what usually happens by the time the pancreas is already damaged. When the pancreas has an acute inflammation, the attacks are only mild. However, in some cases, the attacks can be very severe. The attack as well as the pain will last for only a short time. It will end by the time the pancreas is back to the normal state. On the other hand, there is the chronic inflammation of the pancreas. This is the result when the pancreas became scarred during the attack of the mild inflammation of the pancreas. Unfortunately, during the chronic inflammation of the pancreas, the gland will no longer go back to its normal state.

There are numerous reasons why the pancreas becomes inflamed. However, the top two culprits are the gallstones and abuse of alcohol. Both of these culprits are accountable for almost ninety percent of pancreatitis cases. Alcohol abuse results to the inflammation of the pancreas if the person has been an alcohol drinker for at least six to eight years straight. More often than not, this is the reason why some people have chronic inflammation of the pancreas. On the other hand, the gallstone is formed when there is a buildup in another organ of the abdomen called gallbladder. The gallstone blocks the pancreatic duct. As a result, the digestive juice will be trapped in the pancreas. Pancreatitis due to gallstone usually happens in women who aging fifty years old and above. The inflammation of the pancreas is also a hereditary disease. This condition also happens when there is a high level of fat in the person’s blood.

How would you know if you have pancreatitis? Of course, you will be experiencing pain. It will begin with a mild pain then eventually turn into a severe pain. Moreover, if you have pancreatitis, the pain will get worse after you ate your meal. Furthermore, a person whose pancreas is inflamed may vomit. However, vomiting would not relieve the pain.
