The mail order and telephone order is another type of merchant account used by merchants. Unlike the retail system, the buyer and seller do not need to see face to face. The transaction is either conducted through phone or by the mail; one of the disadvantages of this system is the time it takes to finish the transaction, especially if the system used is the mail system for the transactions. It is the least used out of the three types of merchant accounts, because of the tedious nature. Most of those using this system till date are those who operate their sales through the television, especially when an advert is published on the television, the contact to the product advertised is always a physical address or a telephone number, most times the viewer is encouraged to call and make an order for the product and services advertised.

Adverts on the television are typical examples of the use of mail order and telephone merchant account system. The merchants that operate on the TV and on other media outlets are registered as a merchant with a mail order or phone order system of operation. The method of operation is simple to understand, if a consumer is interested in any service or product, a call is made to the number that appears on the screen. Once the call is received the merchant’s company will simply ask for the credit card number of the caller and the particular product he/she wants. After the request and credit card number is taken, the credit card number is keyed into the merchant account system used by the merchant and the transaction is done to verify the credit account and also subsequently withdraw the amount of money required for the sales deal. The required product is delivered by hand or mail to the customer and that closes the deal.

If the request is made through the mail then the customer writes down his credit card number along with the request, when this gets to the merchant company, the request is processed and the credit card number and account is verified and the amount is transferred to the merchant’s account, after the necessary deductions are removed. The retail company also replies the mail order by sending the goods and the services required along with the receipts to the address of the customer. This whole process is done without human contact; all that is required is the mail or telephone.

Everyone on TV uses the mail order and telephone order system, since there is no way to meet with the consumer or producer. In the early days of the internet, the mail order and telephone order merchant account system was also used until the introduction of the internet merchant account system. The MOTO known as the mail order/telephone order system is still used up till now for online sales transactions on some websites. The first thing to do if one needs to use this system will be register with a merchant account provider that is related to your line of trade.
