Do the words "search engine optimization" put a cold chill into the center of your heart? Does it seem too complicated? Do you even know what SEO means? Well, there's no doubt that it will bring lots of traffic to any website, which will in turn, intensify your list building efforts. However, to do it on a large scale, it takes very specialized knowledge. Can you do it? Should you do it? My answer is yes. There are some very simple techniques that can make your list building efforts go through the roof.

Remember to be list building on every page you can. Put an opt-in box on your website's homepage. Also put an opt-in box into your blog template, and into your profile at MySpace or wherever. If you haven't done these things, do them now! They're extremely important to list building.

To help people find your site, which increases your list building potential, you also want to know a few specific keywords that apply to your niche. My suggestion is to sit down with a piece of paper and a pencil and list as many words as you can imagine that surround your niche.

Maybe you're selling some really cool jewelry. So, you'll probably come up with keywords like necklaces, rings, bracelets, and so on. Keep going, until you can't think of another single word that applies. Then, go to SEOBook.com's keyword discovery tools and find out how many people searched for each term in the previous month. Get rid of the words that have the highest number of searches because they're just too competitive. Also forget terms with 10,000 searches or less because no one is looking for them, and they really won't help you.

From that list, the word that gets the highest number of searches can be the keyword you're going to try to rank for. The second word will be your second keyword, and so on. Choose no more than five words and use those in every blog post you make, up to a density of 2%. That means, if you have 1,000 words, be sure that 20 of them are your keywords. It's best to choose just one for each post you write. Otherwise, you'll go nuts trying to get a 2% density for three or five. Plus, your writing won't sound right to a readers' ear. It will be obvious that you're trying to get ranking in the search engines, which will see your over-stuff article as nothing more than search engine spam and it will be discounted.

OK, so we're list building. Right? How does this apply? Hang on, you'll see...

OK. Your post is done. You're at 2% density for "brooches," let's say. OK. Now, make the word brooches part of your title. Use bold or italic for brooches once in the post, not both and no more than once. Also, link the word brooches to the page where you're selling brooches. Search engine spiders will see all this and think, "Oh, OK... this post is about brooches." When someone types in the word brooches, they may see your page in the search results and visit your blog. Bingo! You have a list building opportunity. Use a phrase like "Sign up for our free weekly buying tips on fine jewelry," and BAM! You have just improved your list building efforts.

Do the very same thing with your MySpace profile, or wherever you hang out, and use your keywords. Your homepage should have your keywords in it for around a 2% density, too. If you do these simple things, you'll be amazed at how much they really help.
