While work at home moms are often the preferred choice for online scammers, website owners are often a second choice. If you have your own website, you are certainly spending some money to keep the site running. If you are putting in the time and money to maintain your website, then you would want to generate some cash with it.

Think how great it would be if you could turn your website into a real home based business that would not only pay for itself, but also generate some decent profits. For a webmaster, affiliate marketing is often the solution.

In and of itself, partnering with a legitimate affiliate marketing company is a great way to earn extra money. By displaying affiliate's links and banners, you will get interested parties to visit your affiliate's website and perhaps purchase a product, a service, or join as an affiliate under you. If this happens, your profit potential increases.

Unfortunately there is a negative aspect of the affiliate marketing industry that will actually hurt your good name as a webmaster and will also result in commissions that are only pennies on the dollar. I'm sure you've seen a site that promotes some great nutritional supplement that literally cures it all? Weight loss for the overweight, a cure for the balding, an increased sexual stamina for those lacking it and a great many other problems that are fixed with a simple tablet after meals.

These miracle cures are promoted on the website via a long list of testimonials, and you can usually recognize the feel of these sites simply by the long list of text they sport, the generosity of fonts employed, and the varying colors these words are written in. A lot of visitors will simply decide these claims are false sensationalism and leave the site. Unfortunately, there will be some people who are curious enough to continue reading and about halfway down they will see a copy of a commission check that the webmaster has posted. In most cases, this will get the unlucky visitors undivided attention because the check will be small enough to be realistic yet big enough to get the visitor excited about the earnings potential of this site or product.

When the visitor is hooked, the scam usually involves showing the website owner as someone who is extremely successful and has decided to take on two or three qualified apprentices and teach them to be successful as well. This involves selling this great product to friends and family and then just sitting back and waiting for the cash to roll in. Additionally, the apprentice will be required to post links on their site. What has just happened is an affiliate scam that ties your success directly into a multi-level marketing scheme. The links on your site may attract potential visitors to the originators website but may also alienate your friends and families by selling them a questionable product. This is not what affiliate marketing is all about. A legitimate affiliate company offers a valuable product or service. You need to be very picky about the affiliates that you partner with because once you are connected to them, they will make or break you. To determine if an affiliate company is a reliable one to promote, simply ask yourself this: Would you personally join this company or purchase products or services from it. If it is too questionable for you to consider joining then you don't want to promote it. The negative reputation you earn from your affiliation with this kind of company will far outweigh any earnings you may make.
